Carragher to captain young Reds side in Switzerland

Liverpool take on Young Boys in the Europa League on Thursday with Brendan Rodgers gambling on his line-up.

Rodgers has decided to rest a host of top stars for the trip to Switzerland with Sunday’s clash with Manchester United in mind.

Captain Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Jose Reina, Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Joe Allen and Martin Kelly have all remained on Merseyside with Rodgers turning to youth.

Seven teenagers have been named in the squad with Jamie Carragher set to captain a largely inexperienced side.

Youngsters Samed Yesil, Suso, Andre Wisdom, Conor Coady, Adam Morgan, Jack Robinson and Dani Pacheco have all been included in the squad.

Loan signing Nuri Sahin should start in midfield after being named on the bench for last weekend’s draw at Sunderland.

Oussama Assaidi, who arrived from Heerenveen in the summer, is likely to make his debut with Wisdom and Suso also set to be thrown into the starting line-up for their debuts.

Young Boys will be hoping to take advantage of Liverpool virtually fielding a reserve team with coach Martin Rueda admitting he has been surprised that the Anfield outfit have left all their best players at home.

“I do not think Liverpool can afford to turn up without their best players. We can embarrass them,” said Rueda.

Young Boys lost to Tottenham in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League play-offs and they have English-born defender Scott Sutter among their ranks.

Raul Bobadilla will lead the line for Young Boys having scored two goals in helping the Swiss qualify for the group stages.
